The Medieval city of St. Emilion

The ancient town St. Emilion is a short 15 minute drive from La Caussade and definitely worth a visit.  Stroll around the ancient cobbled streets, visit its magnificent monolithic cathedral, the beautiful Gothic church & its cloisters, & tour the ancient underground cave system that lies beneath the town.  Have lunch at one of the Michelin starred restaurants, or sip a coffee at the Clock tower square and take in the beautiful view over the medieval town.  Do some wine tasting at one of St. Emilion's many well stocked wine boutiques and bars.  Electric biking & Tuk Tuk tours are also available from the town centre and are a great way to explore the local environs & vineyards. 

The Château & Tower of Montaigne

The Montaigne Tower is a classified historical monument from the XIV century.  It is where Michel Eyquem de Montaigne, the philosopher, historian of the natural world, humanist & moralist from the Renaissance, spent his time writing his essays, meditating & thinking.  The Tower of Montaigne is an important relic of the Renaissance and has become a place of pilgrimage which bears witness to the life and work of this acclaimed thinker & writer.

E-biking tours 

Explore St. Emilion with the freedom of an electric bike tour.  If you've never ridden one, the experience itself is really good fun.  E-bikes offer a really easy way for people of all ages and fitness to get around and enjoy the fresh air & stunning scenery of St. Emilion, even pedalling uphill is a breeze!! Rustic Vines Tours offers full and half day tours which includes a picnic and one or two Chateaux visits (depending on the length of the tour chosen).  See for more details. 

Tuk-Tuk tours

For a novel experience, try a Tuk-Tuk tour.  The Tuk-Tuks are completely electric and provide an ideal way to see the beautiful countryside & Châteaux of St. Emilion.  The Tuk-Tuks are driven by experienced tri-lingual drivers (French/English/Spanish) and will custom each tour to your wishes.  Each tour lasts 50 minutes. Canoe down the Dordogne

The Dordogne river, which in 2007 was listed as a UNESCO Biosphere, is just a few minutes down the hill from La Caussade.  Go exploring down this beautiful tidal river by canoe to make the most of its wild life and tranquility.  It's a lovely day out with family or friends and can choose how far you want to venture, from 6 to 20 kms with starting points from Eynesse, Pessac-sur-Dordogne and Lamothe-Montravel. If you want to explore the area directly around La Caussade, we can arrange for either electric bikes or standard bikes to be delivered to La Caussade and to be at your disposal during your stay.  Please give us plenty of advance notice. 

Hot air ballooning

The gardens of the Lamprey

These large botanical gardens in Sainte Terre, are freely accessible and home to several hundred species of riverside plants, which have been carefully curated along a pebble trail, reflecting the sinuous nature of the Dordogne.  The park is mainly dedicated to the Lamprey, a prehistoric eel like aquatic animal which has been around for 450 million years.  The park also houses a wealth of information on the flora and fauna of the Dordogne.  After visiting the park of the Lamprey, you can visit the Cabestan, the Lamprey Fisherman's Farm and go on a guided tour along the river (with or without a Lamprey tasting).  The tour with the local fishermen, will let you discover the ancient fishing techniques that change according to the tides of the river.  For more information go to

St. Emilion Golf Course

The 5 star St. Emilion Golf Course, designed by American golf course architect Tom Doak (also designed Pacific Dunes in Oregon, Ballyneal in ColoradoBarnbougle Dunes in Tasmania and Cape Kidnappers in New Zealand).  It is ranked the 7th best golf course in France by Golf Digest.   It's18 holes are situated throughout a valley lined with hundred-year-old oak trees, enormous pines trees and of course vineyards.  Located 10 km from the village of Saint Emilion, this unique golf course in France is a definite must for golfing enthusiasts.  See

The Atlantic coast

The Atlantic coast is about 1.5hrs drive away but definitely worth the visit if you have the time and if you love long, wide white sandy beaches and crashing Atlantic waves.  The closest beaches are Lége-Cap Ferret and Lacanau.  However if you go a bit further you can reach the beautiful La Coorniche at Arcachon +33 5 56 22 7211 (reservations a must).  Or if you want a truly authentic experience you can eat fresh oysters on the waters edge at any of the oyster shacks driving out along the peninsula of Cap Ferret, or try the famous Chez Hortense overlooking the bassin of Arcachon and the Dune of Pylat (the biggest sand dune in Europe).

Pharmacies are closed on Sundays, however for emergencies they have a rota system between other pharmacies in the area.  If you go first to the pharmacy in Castillon, there will be a notice to forward you to the pharmacy in service for that weekend.
